## Lesson Plan: Safe Environment: School
### Objective:
By the end of the lesson, toddlers will:
1. Understand the basics of a safe environment at school.
2. Recognize safe and unsafe objects and behaviors.
3. Learn simple rules to stay safe.
### Duration:
30 minutes
### Materials Needed:
- Pictures of a classroom and playground.
- Toy replicas of safe and unsafe objects.
- Flashcards with simple safety rules.
- Storybook about safety.
- Coloring pages and crayons.
### Introduction (5 minutes):
1. **Greeting and Circle Time**: Gather the children in a circle. Sing a welcome song and introduce the topic.
- "Good morning, friends! Today we are going to learn about how to stay safe at school. Can anyone tell me what 'safe' means?" Encourage simple answers like "not getting hurt" or "being careful."
### Activity 1: Storytime (5 minutes)
1. **Read a Story**: Choose a picture book that illustrates safety at school, such as "Officer Buckle and Gloria" by Peggy Rathmann.
- Discuss the story briefly, asking questions like "What did the characters do to stay safe?"
### Activity 2: Identify Safe and Unsafe Objects (10 minutes)
1. **Show Pictures**: Show pictures of a classroom and playground.
- Ask the children to point out things they think are safe and things that might be unsafe.
- Use toy replicas of objects (e.g., soft toys vs. sharp objects) to demonstrate safe and unsafe items.
- Encourage them to place safe objects on one side and unsafe objects on the other.
### Activity 3: Learn Safety Rules (5 minutes)
1. **Flashcard Rules**: Use flashcards with simple safety rules like:
- "Walk, don't run inside."
- "Listen to your teacher."
- "Use both hands on the playground equipment."
2. **Repeat and Review**: Read each rule aloud and have the children repeat after you.
- Discuss why each rule is important in a simple manner.
### Closing Activity: Coloring and Recap (5 minutes)
1. **Coloring Pages**: Hand out coloring pages related to school safety (e.g., children crossing the road, playing safely).
- As the children color, move around and talk to them about what they learned.
- Ask questions such as "Can you tell me one thing you will do to stay safe at school?"
### Conclusion:
1. **Wrap Up and Reflection**: Gather children back in a circle.
- Sing a goodbye song.
- Recap the lesson by asking, "What did we learn about being safe at school today?"
- Praise them for their participation and remind them to practice these rules every day.
### Assessment:
- Observe children’s participation during activities and discussions.
- Listen to their answers and see if they can identify at least one safety rule.
- Check their understanding through their responses and actions during the lesson.
### Notes for Teachers:
- Keep the session interactive and fun to maintain the toddlers’ attention.
- Be ready to gently guide them back on track if they get distracted.
- Offer lots of praise and encouragement to build their confidence and understanding of safety concepts.
